“Songkor” along Bako River, Sarawak

The kelong-like wooden structure is known as” songkor” and over the past 70 years, Bako villagers have been using it to catch bubuk (small prawns) to make bellman. There are about 50 songkor along Bako river, each structure owned by a family and passed down from generation to generation. The Songkor posts are embedded vertically in the riverbed and the villagers use nets made from gunny sacks to trap shrimps during high and low tides. Kampung Bako villagers set up shrimp nets very early in the morning before harvesting the shrimp at noon.
